Caerphilly County Borough Council has recently carried out a review of residents receiving a 25% discount on their council tax.

Single Person Discount (SPD) is claimed when an adult is the sole occupant of a property. Earlier this year, the council wrote to some residents asking them to confirm their current circumstances. This gave residents the opportunity to notify the council if there had been a change in their circumstances.

As a result, the total amount of Single Person Discount being awarded borough-wide has reduced by £184,000 because more than one adult is now living in the household.

Deputy Leader Cllr Barbara Jones said, “While we know the vast majority of our residents are correctly claiming any council tax discounts they receive, unfortunately there are a small minority who are not. We continually review the amount of council tax payable by each household, and would encourage residents to tell us of any household changes straight away.

“Review exercises such as this help ensure that those entitled to such discounts continue to receive them, while making sure that any changes in circumstances are reviewed and recorded”.
