About Welsh medium Education

The Welsh language belongs to everybody. Every child should have the opportunity to learn and use the Welsh language.

Welsh-medium primary schools are available for all pupils whose parents select it.

Most children in Welsh-medium education do not speak Welsh at home. Before the end of their first year, they will be talking with their new friends in Welsh!

Children in Welsh medium schools will be able to speak English as well as speaking Welsh.

There are two Welsh medium Secondary school campus for young people to move on to.  Afterwards they can also use their Welsh language when training, studying, and working.

Choosing Welsh Medium Education

In Caerphilly, around 20% of children go to Welsh medium school. They love playing and learning in two languages, or more.

Welsh medium Schools use Welsh in the early years. Then they bring in English as they progress through school. Children are happy talking in both languages.

Some children start in Ti a Fi (Welsh medium toddler group) and Welsh medium childcare.

Whatever you speak at home, everyone can join a Welsh medium Primary School. Then they go on to one of two Welsh medium Secondary campus.

It’s never too late. Our Latecomer Immersion Unit support children to transfer to Welsh medium Primary.

Whatever you speak at home, children thrive in Welsh medium schools.

In Caerphilly, approximately 88% of our learners in Welsh medium Education are from non-Welsh speaking homes.

Our schools speak both Welsh and English with parents. They want parents to feel part of the school community.

You may find yourself picking up a bit of the language from the children. You’ll hear words that you may already know, have a guess:

amser chwarae / brechdan caws / peldroed / ci bach / ble mae’r esgidiau?

(play time / cheese sandwich / football / puppy / where are the shoes?)

Schools create a learning environment suitable for each individual child. In Welsh-medium schools, children are immersed in a Welsh language environment. They absorb the language whilst making progress in all areas of learning, at their own pace.
