The graphs below show the number and percentage of children in Welsh medium Education from reception to year 11.

The number of children in Welsh medium education has increased from 3,689 in 2016 to 4,015 in 2023.

The percentage of children in Welsh medium Education has increased from 14.9% in 2016 to 16.3% in 2023.

The number of children in year 1 has decreased from 381 in 2016 to 333 in 2023.

The percentage of children in year 1 has decreased from 17.9% in 2016 to 17.2% in 2023.

The number of learners who move from year 6 in Primary to year 7 in Secondary Welsh medium Education has increased from 305 in 2016 to 341 in 2023.

The percentage of learners who move from year 6 in Primary to year 7 in Secondary Welsh medium Education has fluctuated, although there is a slight decrease in 2023 at 95.3%.

The number of learners studying GCSE in Welsh second language has increased from 975 in 2018 to 1377 in 2022.

The number of learners studying GCSE in Welsh language has increased from 235 in 2018 to 287 in 2022,

The percentage of learners with ALN in Welsh medium schools (7.7%) remains lower than the percentage in English medium schools (12.8%).

The School Workforce able to speak Welsh has increased over recent years.

The graphs below show the increase in number of qualified teachers teaching Welsh as a first language in both Primary and Secondary schools.

The number of qualified teachers teaching Welsh in Primary School increased from 85 in 2019 to 120 in 2023.

Both Secondary School graphs need to be used to show the increased number of Welsh speaking qualified teachers from 102 in 2019 to 144 in 2023.

There is a concern that some of the workforce able to speak Welsh are not teaching Welsh.

The data shows there are 69 qualified teachers who are able to teach Welsh but are not doing so. This is a resource we need to explore as we increase the number of places in Welsh medium Education.
