The following A-Z list should help you to decide which container to put you recycling and waste items in. If there is an item not listed here that you would like included in the A-Z list please contact us and we will update this page.

Aerosols

Empty deodorant cans can be placed in the recycling bin. Empty spray paint cans should be placed in the general waste bin

 

Asbestos

Householders (but not business contractors) can take to Full Moon, Penallta, Trehir and Aberbargoed Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRC’s). Maximum amount of 6 bags or 6 sheets. Specialist contractors should be consulted.

Building materials

Household Waste Recycling Centres will accept small quantities of household building materials (less than five bags) free of charge – delivered in a car

Cans

Clean steel and aluminium cans/tins should be placed in the recycling bin

Cartons (Tetrapak)

Cardboard

Clean thin card (such as small cardboard boxes and cereal boxes) should be placed in the recycling bin.

Carrier bags

Re-use carrier bags for shopping trips. Some supermarkets also have carrier bag recycling schemes

Carpets

Household Waste Recycling Centres or collected as a bulky waste collection

CDs

Donate to charity

Christmas cards

Recycle paper based cards in your household recycling collection. Any embellishments such as ribbons or glitter cannot be recycled so should be removed first by simply tearing off that section. Batteries should also be removed from musical cards and disposed of.

Christmas trees

Household Waste Recycling Centre or cut up into manageable pieces and place out for garden waste collection

Clothes

Donate to charity shops or charity collection banks. Clothes in a poor condition can be made into dusters or disposed of at Household Waste Recycling Centres

Coat hangers

Some charity shops may accept coat hangers. Alternatively place in the general waste bin

Computers

Sell/donate or take to a Household Waste Recycling Centre

Cookers

Good condition electrical cookers will be accepted by the Furniture Revival. If it cannot be reused, arrange collection as a bulky waste item or take to a Household Waste Recycling Centre

Crisp packets

General waste bin

Crockery

Can be donated. Broken crockery should be wrapped and placed in the general waste bin

E

Egg boxes

Cardboard/plastic egg boxes can be placed in the recycling bin

Egg shells

Can be composted in your home compost bin or placed in the food waste caddy

Electrical items

Household Waste Recycling Centre

Envelopes

Can be reused by sticking a piece of paper over the address. Can also be placed in the recycling bin

Fluorescent lighting tubes

Foil

Clean foil food trays, clean pie cases and clean kitchen foil can be placed in the recycling bin. Unclean foil should be placed in the general waste bin

Food

Place in the food waste caddy for collection.

Christmas - we’ll collect additional food waste but it must be in bio degradable bags and placed on top of your caddy. 

Fridges/freezers

The Furniture Revival offer a collection service at a small cost

 
Furniture

Reusable items will be accepted by the Furniture Revival. If in a poor condition, arrange a bulky waste collection if the items are too large to take to the Household Waste Recycling Centre

Garden/green waste

Place grass cuttings and small shrubs in the garden waste bag for weekly kerbside collection

Hazardous waste

This should be dealt with carefully. If this cannot be taken to a Household Waste Recycling Centre you will need to arrange disposal with a reputable, licensed private company

Some schools recycle ink cartridges – alternatively some manufacturers will take back used cartridges for recycling

Jewellery

Donate to charity shops or sell

Jigsaws

Donate to charity shops, residential homes or schools

Junk mail

Contact the mailing preference service to stop unwanted junk mail. If you still receive it, it can be placed in the recycling bin

K

Keys

Can be recycled as scrap metal at the Household Waste Recycling Centres

Kitchen appliances

Reusable electrical appliances may be accepted by the Furniture Revival

Leaves

Can be home composted or placed in the green garden waste bag for weekly collection

Small amounts can be placed in the general waste bin. Residents can take larger amounts to the Household Waste Recycling Centres.

Rinse out to ensure they are clean and place in the recycling bin

Toys

Good quality toys can be donated to charity shops or community groups. Toys in a poor condition should be taken to the Household Waste Recycling Centres

Trees

Five feet lengths can be collected using the bulky waste collection service (please note – there is a charge for this service) or taken to Household Waste Recycling Centres for composting

Tyres

Tyre fitters should provide a take-back service when replacing old for new. Residents can take up to four tyres to Penallta, Full Moon, Trehir and Aberbargoed Household Waste Recycling Centre

Please note: You can dispose of a wide range of materials at our household waste recycling centres using a car. We have a permit system in place if you wish to use a van or trailer. These sites are not available for commercial waste or building contractors.
